I’m Alex, a software engineer by day, hiker by night (really it’s more on weekends and holidays!). I have lived in the US, Canada and a couple of countries in Europe. There were therefore plenty of places to go hiking: the Alps, the Appalachians, the Pacific Crest Trail. I have also traveled a lot to feed my passion for hiking and backpacking: South America, New Zealand and South East Asia for example. I enjoy hiking with friends but mostly I hike alone. It gives me peace and time to re-center myself. I think it is important to spend some time by yourself to get to know your inner you. It also helps re-focusing on your life and goals.
The next places I would like to hike through include Iceland and Mongolia. I tend to enjoy places that are remote from civilization with as little light pollution as possible. In my opinion a hiker should have as little impact as possible when going through a trail, a “leave no trace behind” philosophy.
I thought it could be useful for the community to have some info for beginners and experienced hikers, how to prepare for some of the difficult trails I have hiked or simply read what other hikers have experienced. If you would like to contribute to the Hikers’ Columns to share your view of hiking and backpacking as a passion and a lifestyle feel free to contact me ( email@example.com ).
